“Paddle in Paradise” with husband and wife team, Jennie and Conrad La Barrie.

Born in Antigua, Conrad has enjoyed thirty years experience working in different aspects of tourism in London, Paris and Antigua. A successful hotelier in England, he met his English ‘Lincolnshire Lass’ Jennie and married her on a rainy day in London, promising her memorable sunsets and glittering seas. Bringing her back to his little island in 1978 they jointly created several new companies, all designed to provide outstanding activity experiences for visitors.

The ultimate kayak Eco adventure was created in September 2001 – a risk to be reckoned with directly after 9/11, but, realizing the potential and opportunity of sharing the unspoilt North Sound Marine Park with visitors - ‘embracing it, but not invading it’ they went full steam ahead with the blessing of the government marine division and Environmental Awareness Group. Hiring local fishermen with a wealthy knowledge of the reefs, sealife, flora and fauna the trip has become a huge success with families and discerning traveler ’s alike.
‘Arrive as a guest and leave as a friend’ has become a genuine catchphrase rather than cliché as Conrad and Jennie are so obviously proud of their product and genuinely have a passion to please.
Repeat customers and regular write-ups in the travel media confirm this. The notice board in the kayak clubhouse is laden with hundreds of testimonials from people from all over the world, however, they ’re not sure if the one message written in Swahili is complimentary or not!

When complimented about the warm hospitality, the amount of Eco information and attention to detail, Jennie simply states that they ’ve tried to include everything that herself and Conrad would expect, if they were the customer, without it appearing contrived. Indeed, the trip has some delightful surprises which I won ’t spoil by revealing here.

Though Antigua is known for its 365 beaches, this magical marine environment is revealed in all its glory by the vision and exposure by this little kayak company. Hundreds of school children have benefited from ‘floating classrooms’, learning about nurturing the fragile eco systems, protecting wildlife, conservation and ecology.
